In 1525, master artist Albrecht Durer set forth a system of rules for the geometric construction of Roman capitals as a guide for inscription artists. This form of a “logical” approach to letter design has been used since, for over 500 years, and is seen in the inherent geometry of many computer fonts. While this type of system often lets the geometry take precedent over the artist’s intuition, Durer’s system manages to keep a good balance of beautiful forms and logical construction.
